The BCCI has made a statement announcing India’s squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against West Indies starting October 2 in Ahmedabad, and the biggest news is Ravindra Jadeja has been included as the vice-captain for the first time in the longest format of the game. While Jadeja has served as deputy on previous occasions in ODIs and T20Is, this is a momentous event in his Test career. Shubman Gill will continue to lead the side after captaining them for the first time in England earlier this year.
Rishabh Pant remains unavailable as he continues rehabilitation on his fractured foot after being the vice-captain on the England tour. He is currently undergoing rehab at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and isn’t yet fit to play competitive cricket. To replace Pant behind the stumps, Dhruv Jurel and N Jagadeesan have been picked in the squad, with Jurel expected to take over the wicketkeeping position.
There were questions about Jasprit Bumrah’s availability with just a three-day gap between the Asia Cup final, which is on September 28, and the first Test against the West Indies. However, the chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar made it clear that Bumrah is fit, has had a rest and wants to play the two matches. His fitness question was not a concern since he had missed the entire final Test in England and had five weeks before the Asia Cup to recover.
Six players who were on tour in England (Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Akash Deep, Anshul Kamboj, Arshdeep Singh, Shardul Thakur) were excluded from these Tests Herr in India. Easwaran, Akash Deep and Kamboj will all be part of the Rest of India team for the Irani Cup. Agarkar addressed Nair’s exclusion and said selectors have huge expectations from him despite a couple of decent efforts while Devdutt Padikkal was selected for his ability to play both the anchor and attacking role and because he was in form recently.
The team has a spin-focused mix that is appropriate for a home series. Along with Jadeja, India will tap into Washington Sundar, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav to take advantage of the turning tracks. Nitish Kumar Reddy has been added as a fast-bowling allrounder. The pace attack will be fronted by Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.
This series is India’s next series in the WTC campaign, the second in the 2025-27 cycle. They are currently in third place on the points table with 46.67 percentage points after drawing the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England 2-2. Australia and Sri Lanka sit ahead of them while West Indies have yet to register percentage points.
